Upper Mustang Trek Overview

Upper Mustang Trek takes you on a 14 day journey up to the magical hidden city of Lo Manthang. Stunning views of mountain vistas, trekking through the adventurous trans-Himalayan terrain and the chance to experience the untouched Buddhist culture of the locals; the Upper Mustang Trek offers so many possibilities.

Upper Mustang  has remained isolated from outside influence and modernization for most of history. It existed as the kingdom of Lo, being a dependency of the kingdom of Nepal until monarchy was abolished in favor of democracy recently. The kingdom’s capital, Lo Manthang is a walled city established all the way back in the 15th century. It is the closest real world place to the mythical land of Shangri La. The locals, commonly known as Lobas, follow a lifestyle, culture and religion that has been preserved in its original state more or less, for hundreds of years.

The 14 Day Upper Mustang Trek starts with a scenic flight or enjoyable drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Our journey continues in the beautiful Annapurna region, as we take another flight over the Himalayas to Jomsom and eventually reach the trailhead at Kagbeni. Even before the trek starts, you will get to enjoy fantastic views of mountain vistas including that of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhare and more.

Kagbeni is basically the entry point to Upper Mustang. We will enter the restricted area from here and trek along the Kali Gandaki River up to Chele. The trek gradually gets tougher once we reach over 3,000 meters altitude and start crossing the various high passes. Trekking through Syangboche, Ghami and Charang, we will cross the final high pass at Lo La (3,900m) before we reach the furthest point of our trek at Lo-Manthang.

Lo Manthang is the former capital of the kingdom of Lo. The three ancient monasteries, the sky caves and the Tibet Nepal border nearby constitute just some of the many interesting places to explore here. Hence, we will have a full day off here to visit as many places as we like.

From here on, we will head back to Jomsom, retracing our steps for the most part through Ghami, Gheling and Chusang. The easier return journey lets you experience the fascinating traditions and hospitality of the locals. Our trek ends a few days later in Jomsom, after which, a couple of flights will have us back at the capital in just a few hours.

Upper Mustang Trekking was only started recently in 1992. As a restricted region, trekking here is somewhat different from other treks in Nepal. For instance, it is significantly more expensive, as the Upper Mustang Restricted Area permit alone costs $500 per person for the first 10 days and $50 for every day after. Apart from this, the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit ($20) will also be necessary.

Why Choose Upper Mustang Trek?

Choose the Upper Mustang Trek for a truly unique and captivating adventure in the mystical region of Mustang, Nepal. Immerse yourself in the rich Tibetan-influenced culture, explore ancient monasteries and cave dwellings, and witness stunning desert-like landscapes against the backdrop of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. This trek offers an exclusive experience in a restricted area, providing a rare opportunity to discover the hidden treasures of Upper Mustang while enjoying unparalleled scenery and cultural insights.

Upper Mustang Trek Difficulty

The unique landscape of Upper Mustang, consisting of hilly and mountainous terrain mixed with dry valleys offer an offbeat trekking experience. Although graded as a moderate difficulty trek, some strenuous parts like crossing the Lo La and other high passes may be a bit tough for new trekkers.

While trekking in Upper Mustang, it typically takes around 2 weeks to complete the journey, considering you trekked for 5 – 6 hours a day on average. The trek involves travelling through places located between altitudes of 3 – 4,000 meters for the most part. Hence, you need to follow proper measures for acclimatization. Being healthy and properly fit and prepared is also another important thing to note.

Best Season for Upper Mustang Trek

The Upper Mustang Trek is one of the few treks in Nepal that can be done at any time of the year. As with most treks, we still recommend spring (March – May) and autumn (September – November) as the best times for the trek. These seasons are the peak season for trekking and tourism. Clear skies, breathtaking views, stable weather, blooming nature and pleasant vibes all around lead to a truly enticing experience.

Winter isn’t a bad choice either if your main goal is to enjoy superb views of the mountain vistas including the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. As it is located beyond the Dhaulagiri massif, the region is shielded from the monsoon rain that affects the rest of the country. Hence, Upper Mustang Trekking is perfectly doable in the monsoon season as well.

Accommodations Facilities During The Trek

During the trek, accommodations are typically provided in tea houses or lodges along the route. These facilities offer basic yet comfortable rooms with twin beds and shared bathrooms. You can expect simple meals such as dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, and other local dishes served at the tea houses. The accommodations provide a cozy place to rest and socialize with fellow trekkers, often featuring communal dining areas and stunning mountain views. It's recommended to bring a sleeping bag for added warmth and comfort, especially during colder months.

It's recommended to try local specialties and carry some snacks for extra energy during the trek.

The permits required for the Upper Mustang Trek include the Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). The restricted area permit helps preserve the unique cultural and environmental heritage of Mustang while ensuring the safety and management of visitors in this remote area.
