Everest Base Camp Trek is an exhilarating journey to the foothills of the world’s highest peak, Everest (8,848m) and back. As with most other treks in the Khumbu region, the EBC trek starts with a flight to Lukla. The trail passes through Phakding, Monjo and various other Sherpa villages to the major settlement of the region, Namche Bazaar.

Our first acclimatization day for the trip will be at Namche, where we will spend our rest day exploring the market town. Hikes to Khumjung village and Everest View Hotel are also popular options. The trek continues through Tengboche to Dingboche, where we will have our second acclimatization day.  Such acclimatization days are an important part of trekking in the Himalayas.

For the next part of the trek, you will follow the scenic trail to Lobuche. You’ll get witness views of various peaks along the Mahalangur Himal range such as Khumbutse, Pumori, Nuptse, Lhotse and possibly even Everest. Past Lobuche lies the final settlement of the region,Gorakh Shep.

Once, we’re at Gorakh Shep, we will go for a late afternoon hike to the Everest Base Camp. The very next morning, we will also go for a pre-dawn hike up to Kala Pattar. In the span of just half a day, you’ll get to witness close-up views of the Khumbu glacier and the dreaded icefall, Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Changtse and much more.

With our main objectives accomplished, we will now begin our return journey. Enjoy trekking through the scenic trails past the Sherpa villages, monasteries and forests once more. We will retrace our steps all the way to Lukla. As we catch the flight back to Kathmandu, the 14 Day Everest Base Camp Trek will come to an end.

Everest Base Camp Trek Difficulty

Everest Base Camp Trek is generally graded as a moderate-strenuous difficulty trek. The trek mostly takes place over 3000 meters with the peak altitude at 5,545m (Kala Patthar). Be prepared to trek for 6-7 hours a day over rough hilly and semi mountainous terrain. Over the course of the whole journey, you will cover a total distance of about 130km or so.

Best Season for Everest Base Camp Trek

As the most popular trek in Nepal, the Everest Base Camp Trek receives visitors all year long. However, some seasons are obviously better than others depending on your preferences. Spring (March – May) and autumn (September – November) are generally the best periods for the trek thanks to the stable weather and clear views during the periods.

Winter trekking is also possible but proper preparation is necessary for it. The temperature tends to drop very low during winter, particularly at higher altitudes. Extra snowfall means you get to enjoy extra snow on the mountains but there is also a possibility of passes getting blocked off and lodges remaining closed if the snowfall is excessive.

Monsoon is the off season for trekking in most parts of Nepal. The unpredictable downpour can mean mediocre views and a threat of landslides and floods. We only recommend this period for keen naturalists who wish to enjoy the blooming nature of this season.
