Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek is a scenic and exciting trek to the foothills of the tenth highest peak in the world. Also called the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek, the journey of 10 days takes you through charming Gurung villages, pleasant rhododendron forests and scenic trails to the base of Annapurna I (8,091m).
The Annapurna Base Camp offers a lot of variety in terms of route taken. The trailhead is located at Nayapul, but the trail diverges towards either Ghorepani or Jhinu depending on the route you wish to take. Our 10 Day Annapurna Base Camp Trek follows the latter route, with Chhomrong as our destination for the first day. The next day, the trail leads us through the Modi Khola valley past Sinuwa and Bamboo to Dovan.
The Short trek to the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) will take us above the 4,000 meter mark. The scenic trail will first take us through Himalaya Hotel and Deurali to the Machhapuchhare Base Camp (MBC). From MBC, we will need to trek further for a couple of hours to arrive at the Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m). You will witness magnificent views of Machhapuchhare, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna and the Annapurna range from the base camp.
After trekking to ABC, our return journey will mostly be on the same route as before. The easier downhill trek means you’ll get to enjoy more of the scenery of the Annapurna region as well as the culture and hospitality of the local Gurungs. We’ll be at Pokhara in a couple of days. As we catch the flight back to Kathmandu, the 10 Day Annapurna Base Camp Trek will come to an end.

The max altitude reached during the trek is at Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m). Apart from that, most of the trek takes place below 3,000 meters altitude, which means the threat of altitude sickness is minimal. Trekking hours average to around 5-6 hours per day.
Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek is open for trekking all year long. As with most treks in Nepal, spring (March – May) and autumn (September – November) are generally regarded as the best periods for the trek as they have offer the best views with clear skies and stable weather.
Winter trekking is a good option for those who wish to enjoy the best mountain views with extra snowfall. However, the temperature will routinely drop below zero and lodges can sometimes remain closed because of this. We advise being properly prepared if you are thinking of trekking during winter.
Monsoon trekking is possible but not recommended. Monsoon is the off season for trekking, and for good reason. The weather tends to be unpredictable during this period and cloudy skies means subpar views as well. The trails can also become dangerous due to the rainfall.
During the trek to Annapurna Base Camp, accommodations are available in teahouses or lodges along the trail. These facilities offer basic yet comfortable rooms with twin beds or dormitory-style arrangements. Bedding and blankets are provided, but it's recommended to bring a sleeping bag for extra warmth, especially at higher altitudes. Most teahouses have communal dining areas where trekkers can enjoy hearty meals and socialize. While amenities like hot showers and charging outlets may be available for an additional cost, the warmth of hospitality and stunning mountain views make for a cozy and memorable stay during the trek.
During the ABC Short Trek, meals are typically provided at teahouses along the trail. You can expect a variety of delicious options including dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, soups, momos (dumplings), chapatis (flatbreads), and seasonal vegetables. These meals are freshly prepared and offer a satisfying refuel after a day of trekking. Vegetarian options are widely available, and teahouses also serve hot drinks like tea and coffee to keep you warm. It's advisable to carry some snacks like energy bars and biscuits for quick bites between meals.
For the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Short Trek, you will need two main permits: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) card. These permits are essential for entering and trekking in the Annapurna Conservation Area. You can obtain these permits from the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu or Pokhara, or through authorized trekking agencies. Make sure to carry these permits with you during the trek as they may be checked at various checkpoints along the trail.
The ABC Short Trek typically begins with a scenic drive from Pokhara to the trailhead at Nayapul or Phedi, depending on the chosen route. From there, the trekking journey involves hiking through picturesque villages, lush forests, and terraced fields. The trekking route does not require motorable transportation beyond the initial drive, as you will be walking on well-marked trails through the stunning Annapurna region. Along the way, you'll pass through traditional Nepali settlements and enjoy breathtaking mountain views, making the journey to Annapurna Base Camp a memorable and rewarding adventure on foot.
For the ABC Short Trek, hiring a local guide and/or porter is recommended to enhance your trekking experience and ensure safety. Local guides are knowledgeable about the trail, weather conditions, and cultural aspects of the region, providing valuable insights throughout the journey. Porters can assist in carrying your gear, allowing you to focus on enjoying the trek without the burden of heavy loads. Hiring guides and porters also supports the local community and contributes to a smoother and more enjoyable trek to Annapurna Base Camp.
For the ABC Short Trek, it's essential to pack appropriate trekking equipment. This includes sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support, comfortable and moisture-wicking clothing layers, a warm sleeping bag suitable for cold temperatures, a backpack to carry essentials, trekking poles for stability, a headlamp or flashlight, and sun protection items like sunscreen and sunglasses. Additionally, bring a reusable water bottle or hydration system, basic first aid kit, snacks for energy, and a trekking map or guidebook. Having the right equipment ensures a comfortable and enjoyable trek to Annapurna Base Camp.
