The trek involves crossing of three high mountain passes; Kongma La (5535m), Cho La (5430m) and Renjo La (5355m), visits to Kala Patthar and theEverest Base Camp as well as exploration of the pristine Gokyo valley.

As with most treks in the Everest region, the Everest Three High Passes trek starts from Lukla, which is generally reached via a flight from Kathmandu. The first week of trekking mostly involves passing through the various Sherpa villages like Phakding, Namche, Tengboche, Dingboche and Chhukung. This presents a fantastic opportunity to experience lifestyle of the Sherpa people along with their culture, traditions and hospitality. On the way from Chhukung to Lobuche, we will cross our first high pass, Kongma La at 5,535m.

The second week of trekking will be a very enjoyable period. First, we will trek to Gorak Shep and go for an evening hike to the famed Everest Base Camp. The next morning, we will head to Kala Pattar to witness the heavenly sunrise view from the vantage point. Afterwards, we will make our way to Gokyo via Dzongla and in doing so, cross the second high pass, Cho La at 5,420m.

We will take a full day off for exploration around the pristine Gokyo valley. The glacial lakes of Gokyo and their turquoise blue waters, paired with the amazing viewpoint at Gokyo Ri make Gokyo one of the most enchanting places in the Everest region. After exploring Gokyo, we will begin our return journey. We will cross the third and final high pass, Renjo La at 5,360m during our trek to Lungden.

With all our major goals accomplished, all that’s left is to retrace our steps via Namche to Lukla. As we catch the flight back to Kathmandu, the 18 day Everest Three High Passes Trek will finally come to an end.

Everest Three High Passes Trek Difficulty

Everest Three High Passes Trek is a challenging trek best suited for people with prior trekking experience. Technical skills aren’t necessary for the trek but people with little to no trekking experience will have difficulty on the trek nonetheless.

The trek involves crossing three high passes of over 5000 meters. In addition, hikes to EBC and Kala Pattar and climbing of peaks like Chhukung Ri and Gokyo Ri are also fairly tough endeavors. Thus, we recommend taking adequate days off for rest and acclimatization during this trek.

Best Season for Everest Three High Passes Trek

We recommend the spring (March – May) and autumn (September – November) seasons as the best times for the Everest Three High Passes Trek. These periods have the most stable weather with clear skies and great views. As such, these are also peak seasons for trekking.

Contrary to this, monsoon (June - August) trekking is generally not recommended as the unpredictable weather and rainfall can lead to mediocre views and unsafe trails. While winter trekking (December - February) is generally possible and can be quite rewarding but the temperature can get quite low and excessive snowfall can sometimes block off the high passes. Thus, we advise being properly prepared if you choose this time for trekking.

Accommodations Facilities During The Trek

During the Everest Three High Passes Trek, accommodations primarily consist of tea houses or lodges along the trail. These accommodations offer basic yet comfortable rooms with shared bathrooms. You can expect amenities such as a bed with blankets, hot meals, and communal dining areas. For the Everest Three High Passes Trek, you will need permits including the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit, which can be obtained in Kathmandu or directly in Lukla. Our first acclimatization day will be at Namche. Although it has only been a few days on the trek, we are already at quite high altitudes and will be ascending even higher on the coming days. As such, taking a day or two off for acclimatization is important to combat the risk of altitude sickness or AMS. You can spend the day exploring Namche, enjoying its various facilities and interacting with the locals and children. If you’re feeling rather energetic, trekking to Khumjung village is also a popular option among trekkers. You’ll get to witness the traditional Sherpa lifestyle and culture there along with some good views of mountains as well.

We will make the decision considering the fact that we have to cross the high pass of Kongma La the next day.

The trek typically takes around 16-18 days, including acclimatization days and challenging passes crossings. The duration can vary depending on the itinerary and trekking pace.

The best times for this trek are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons when the weather is stable, and the skies are clear, offering optimal trekking conditions.
