Witness a magnificent sunrise view among the panorama of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and numerous other peaks on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek!
Also called the Annapurna Panorama Trek or the Annapurna Sunrise Trek, the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is one of the most popular treks in the Annapurna region, as well as Nepal in general. It is arguably the best trek throughout Nepal if you’re looking to enjoy some of the best views of the Himalayas in a short amount of time. The sunrise view from the vantage point at Poon Hill ridge is honestly unmatched. On a good day, you’ll get to enjoy a glorious panorama of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Machhapuchhare, Manaslu, Hiunchuli, Lamjung, Tukuche and more!
The scenery and mountain vistas on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek are certainly amazing but that’s not all it has to offer. The trail also takes you through the famous Gurung village of Ghandruk, in addition to numerous other Gurung and Magar villages. While spending time in these villages, you’ll get to mingle with the friendly locals, enjoy their hospitality and gain a genuine insight into their unique culture and lifestyle.
Our 05 Day Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek starts with a drive to the trailhead at Nayapul. Following the 1-2 hour drive, we’ll reach Nayapul where the trail diverges to various locations. We will head to Tikhedhunga, and eventually to Ghorepani the next day.
Since we will be at Ghorepani by the afternoon, it is possible to make the short one hour hike up to Poon Hill ridge. If the weather looks good, this may be a good idea. Generally, this is not recommended though as trekkers prefer to save the glorious view for the next morning instead.
After we’ve had our fill of the scenery from Poon Hill, we will head to Tadapani, followed by a trek to Ghandruk the next day. Ghandruk is one of the largest Gurung villages, known for being home to countless Gurkhas. The Gurung Cultural Museum here is also a popular attraction, especially for first time visitors.
On the final day, we will go for the short trek from Ghandruk to Nayapul. While Nayapul is the common destination to catch a ride to Pokhara, transportation services are available directly from Ghandruk as well. The 05 Day Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek ends as we drop you off at your hotel or the airport.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is an easy trek that can be performed by anybody that is at least decently fit. The trek mostly takes place below 3,000 meters altitude and the highest point of the trek is only 3,210 meters at Poon Hill. You only need to trek for 4-5 hours a day on average. The trails are well trodden and well equipped, meaning the trek can be performed even by elderly or children.
Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is easily one of the best treks in Nepal in terms of scenery and landscapes offered. As such, choosing the correct time to visit is important if you want to make the most of this trek. The trek can be done all year long but spring (March – May) and autumn (September – November) are generally regarded as the best periods for the trek. The crisp weather and clear skies will provide you with some of the best views of the Himalayas you’ll ever see.
Since the trek is an easy one at fairly low altitudes, winter trekking is also possible. It is a good option for those who wish to enjoy the best mountain views with extra snowfall. Monsoon trekking is possible but not recommended. Monsoon is the off season for trekking, and for good reason. The weather tends to be unpredictable during this period and cloudy skies means subpar views as well. The trails can also become somewhat perilous due to the rainfall.
During the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, accommodation facilities are primarily in tea houses or guesthouses along the trail. These lodges offer basic but comfortable rooms with twin beds and shared bathrooms. You can expect simple meals such as dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, and other local dishes. The tea houses provide a cozy place to rest and socialize with fellow trekkers, often featuring communal dining areas and stunning mountain views. It's recommended to bring a sleeping bag for added warmth and comfort, especially during colder months.
During the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, meals are typically provided at tea houses or guesthouses along the trail. The menu consists of a variety of dishes including dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, soups, vegetables, and sometimes momos (dumplings). Breakfast options often include eggs, pancakes, porridge, or Tibetan bread with tea or coffee. Meals are freshly prepared, hearty, and designed to provide energy for trekking. It's recommended to try local specialties and carry some snacks for extra energy during the trek.
For the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, you will need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) card. The ACAP permit is required to enter the Annapurna Conservation Area, which covers the trekking route. The TIMS card is a trekking registration and information system aimed at ensuring the safety and security of trekkers in the region. These permits can be obtained from the Nepal Tourism Board or through registered trekking agencies in Kathmandu or Pokhara before starting your trek.
Transportation to the starting point of the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek typically involves a bus or private vehicle from Pokhara to Nayapul, which is the gateway to the trekking route. The journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours depending on road conditions. From Nayapul, the trek begins on foot, following well-marked trails through picturesque villages and lush landscapes towards Ghorepani and Poon Hill. After completing the trek, transportation back to Pokhara can be arranged in a similar manner.
For the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, hiring a guide or porter is optional but highly recommended for added convenience and support. A knowledgeable guide can provide valuable insights into the local culture, history, and geography of the region while ensuring a safe and enjoyable trekking experience. Porters are available to carry your belongings, allowing you to trek more comfortably with just a day pack. Guides and porters can be arranged through trekking agencies in Pokhara or at the start of the trek in Nayapul. Their assistance contributes to the local economy and enhances the overall trekking experience.
For the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, essential trekking equipment includes sturdy hiking boots, waterproof and windproof clothing layers, a comfortable backpack, trekking poles (optional), a sleeping bag suitable for cold weather, a headlamp or flashlight, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a refillable water bottle.
