The Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour is the best way to experience the beauty and magnificence of the Everest region in the shortest amount of time. The Everest Region is the most popular region among trekkers and tourists in Nepal, and for good reason. It is home to the world’s highest peak, Everest (8,848m), along with countless other towering peaks. Visiting the Everest Base Camp is a dream for adventurers across the world. The pristine Gokyo region attracts thousands every year with its enchanting beauty, and treks like Everest Three High Passes gain more popularity every day. Even though there is so much to experience and explore here, people may still be limited by issues like time, health problems or physical fitness requirements etc. The perfect solution to this problem is our Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour.

The Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour begins at the capital, where the flight takes you over the scenic viewpoint at Nagarkot and the lush hills of Jiri. In a little over half an hour, we will make our first landing at the Tenzing Hillary Airport in Lukla. Following the brief stop there for refueling, we will resume our journey to EBC.

The flight takes us over the Sherpa villages of Namche, Syangboche, Tengboche, Pheriche, and eventually the final settlement, Gorakhshep. Our default landing location will be the Everest Base Camp (5,364m) but it may be changed to Kala Pattar (5,545m) if we encounter some issues with the weather. Both locations offer superb close up panoramas of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and various other peaks.

We won’t have much time ground time after landing, 10 to 15 minutes at max. Staying any longer can be dangerous for our bodies due to the threat of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). We will descend down towards Syangboche and land near the Everest View Hotel. We will have our breakfast here while enjoying a close up view of Everest. After an hour or so, we will depart for Lukla. Similar to before, we’ll have a quick stop at Lukla for refueling. Another half hour heli ride will finally have us back at the capital and the Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour will be completed.

Best Season for Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour

The Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour can be done all year long as it is a single day tour. The actual tour takes no more than a few hours to complete, meaning as long as the weather looks good, the tour can be done in any season. However, you may certainly find some seasons to be better than others depending on your preferences.

Two seasons are recommended as the best times for the tour; spring and autumn. They are also the peak seasons for trekking and tourism in Nepal, and for good reason.

Spring (March – May) presents an immaculate combination of blooming nature and greenery with crystal clear views. The verdant hills get filled by rhododendrons, junipers and other wild flowers and the skies are clear with barely any clouds, meaning you get to enjoy some amazing views and scenery.

Similarly, autumn (September - November) is also known for offering some of the best views throughout the year. The monsoon rain washes away most of the dust and pollution for a while, meaning you get to enjoy some amazing mountain views even from the cities. This is also the most auspicious time of the year for Nepal, as major festivals like Dashain and Tihar lead to a whole month of holidays and festivities. Thus, visitors during this period get to enjoy the pleasant and festive vibes during their stay.

The Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour can also be performed in winter. Winter touring can be hit and miss, as the days tend to be hazy with low visibility around the mountains. However, if you have enough time to spare, waiting for a clear day means you get to enjoy the very best views possible. Landing at the base camp will also feel extra satisfying thanks to the extra ice and snow on the peaks.

Monsoon touring is also possible, but generally not done due to various reasons. It is the off season as the unpredictable weather and random downpour can lead to poor views and a generally mediocre experience. Similar to winter touring, if you’re lucky to tour on a clear day, the views and experience will certainly be on another level though.

Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour Difficulty

The Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour is an easy tour that can be performed by pretty much anyone. Travelling during the tour is done via private vehicle on land, and by heli in the air. Little to no walking is involved which means this tour is as easy as can be.

The max altitude reached during the tour will be either at the Everest Base Camp (5,364m) or Kala Patthar (5,545m). Although we are at risk of altitude sickness at this elevation, we won’t need to be worried as we will descend after only 10 – 15 minutes.

Please do inform us beforehand if you have a fear of flying/heights, or some health condition that we should know about.

Clothing and Preparation

The Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour takes you right to the foothills of the highest peak in the world. The weather and temperature will change rapidly as you gain altitude, which means you need to be accordingly prepared as well. Wearing proper clothing by layering and having UV protection to combat the strong sunlight are obvious things to remember. In addition, we also recommend:

  • Windproof Down Jacket, Warm Trousers and Sunhat
  • Scarf and Sunglasses/Goggles
  • Sun lotion
  • A bottle of water and toilet paper
  • Mobiles and cameras
  • Your passport or passport copy

Outline Itinerary

Day 01: Flight (Kathmandu– Lukla – Everest Base Camp / Kala Patthar – Lukla – Kathmandu)

The Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour begins once we pick you up from your hotel. We will head to the Tribhuwan International Airport via private transport. After all preparations are complete, we will board the heli and begin our journey. We will first fly past Nagarkot, and over the hills of Jiri on the way to Lukla. The flight will take a little over half an hour to complete. In the meantime, enjoy the first views of typical Nepali scenery of verdant hills, twisting roads and quaint villages.

The small hillside airstrip at the Tenzing Hillary Airport is famous for giving an exciting landing experience to visitors. We will have a short break here for refueling. After around 15 mins, we will continue the Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour. Enjoy a spectacular bird’s eye view of the world’s highest peak, Everest along with Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Ama Dablam, Gaurishanker and more!

Our second landing will be at the Everest Base Camp (5,364m) or Kala Patthar (5,545m) depending on the weather and some other factors. Trekking to these locations typically take longer than a week, but via flight, we will reach there just half an hour. As mentioned before, we will land at one of these locations with some ground time as well. You’ll have around 10 to 15 minutes to fully savor the beauty and magnificence surrounding you. Take some memorable pictures before we hop on the heli again for the descent.

The reason why we need to leave after only 10 – 15 mins is because of the altitude we are at. Trekkers slowly gain altitude over more than a week to reach the Everest Base Camp (5,364m). We, on the other hand, have covered this distance in just an hour or so. We are at risk of altitude sickness, and it can be a real threat if not taken seriously. Thus, we will leave after only a short while at EBC.

A short 15 min flight will take us to the famous Everest View Hotel near Syangboche. Here, we’ll have a delicious breakfast at almost 4,000 meters while enjoying a close up view of Everest. We’ll begin our return journey after an hour or so at the hotel. Similar to before, we’ll have a brief stop at Lukla for refueling. From there, it will be a straightforward 40 flight with no interruptions back to Kathmandu.
