Pikey Peak Trek is a recently opened short trek in the Khumbu region that offers amazing views of Everest as well as a panorama of numerous other peaks. It is a fairly easy trek perfect trek for anyone looking to enjoy some of the best views of the Nepalese Himalayan landscape in a short amount of time.
Pikey Peak is a 4,065m high hill that is regarded as one of the best viewpoints in the Everest region Trekking. Even Sir Edmund Hillary has called Pikey Peak as his favorite place to view Everest from. Aside from superb mountain views, Pikey Peak Trek offers a genuine trekking experience through its rather less travelled trails. The region’s various chortens, monasteries, and of course the locals also offer a good cultural experience during the journey.
Pikey Peak Trek has a variety of options in terms of route. You can start the trek with a drive to Dhap or the less taken route via Shivalaya. A direct flight from Kathmandu to Phaplu is also available. Our default itinerary will take us on a drive from Kathmandu to Dhap. We will trek 4-5 hours daily for the next few days and pass numerous small villages as we slowly gain altitude. On the fifth day, we will finally make the morning hike to Pikey Peak.
Pikey Peak sports spectacular views of Everest (8,848m) and a number of other peaks like Thamserku (6608m), Kangtega (6685m), Dorje Lakpa (6966m), Gaurishankar (7134m) and more. On a clear day, you’ll be able to views peaks ranging from Kanchenjunga in the east to Langtang and Manaslu in central Nepal, all the way to Annapurna and Dhaulagiri in the west.
Before our return journey, we will take a day off to visit the nearby Thuptenchholing monastery. Spending some time at this 19th century Gompa will provide you a better insight into the lifestyle, culture, traditions and religion of the people of Rolwaling region. Finally, we will trek to Phaplu and the 09 Day Pikey Peak Trek will come to an end as we catch flight back to Kathmandu.

Pikey Peak Trek is a moderate difficulty trek that can be performed without prior trekking experience. The trek can be completed in less than a week or extended to almost 2 weeks depending on the route taken and places explored. The highest altitude reached during the trek is at Pikey Peak (4,065m). With most of the trail being below 3,000 meters, altitude sickness is generally not an issue for this trek.
The Pikey Peak Trek March – May) and au can be performed all year long. Generally, spring (Atumn (September – November) are regarded as the best seasons due to their stable weather, good views and a pleasant experience in general. Winter trekking (December - February) is a good option for those who wish to enjoy stunning mountain views enhanced by the extra snow. Monsoon trekking (June - August) is possible but generally not recommended as the unpredictable weather and rainfall can lead to mediocre views and unsafe trails.
During the Pikey Peak Trek, accommodations typically consist of tea houses or basic lodges along the trail. These lodges provide simple yet comfortable rooms with shared bathrooms. You can expect basic amenities such as a bed with blankets, hot meals, and a cozy communal dining area to relax and recharge after a day of trekking.
During the Pikey Peak Trek, meals are provided at tea houses or lodges along the route. You can enjoy a variety of local and international dishes such as dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, soups, vegetables, and occasional treats like momos (dumplings). Meals are hearty and filling, providing the necessary energy for trekking in the Himalayas.
For the Pikey Peak Trek, you will need a TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) card, which can be obtained through a trekking agency in Kathmandu or Pokhara. Additionally, you may require a local entry permit depending on the specific route and region you plan to trek through. It's advisable to check with your trekking agency or local authorities to ensure you have the necessary permits before starting the trek.
Transportation to the starting point of the Pikey Peak Trek typically involves a scenic drive from Kathmandu to the town of Dhap, depending on your chosen route. From there, the trek begins on foot through picturesque villages and landscapes. Private or shared vehicles can be arranged for the journey from Kathmandu to the trailhead, taking approximately 8-10 hours by road.
For the Pikey Peak Trek, it's recommended to hire a local guide and porter. A guide will provide valuable insight into the trail, ensure safety, and assist with navigation, while a porter can help carry your belongings, allowing you to trek comfortably. Hiring these local support staff also contributes to the local economy and enhances your overall trekking experience.
When you arrive at the Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu, complete all customs and visa procedures and meet up with our representative outside the terminal. Look for signboards of your name. They will escort you to your hotel and you can spend the rest of the day as you like.

After all preparations are complete and the equipment is loaded, we will get on our private vehicle (generally a land cruiser) for the drive to Dhap. We will follow the Sunkoshi River up to Ghurmi, where it mixes with the Tama Koshi to form the greater Koshi River. If we haven’t had breakfast yet, we will stop for food at Ghurmi. Afterwards, we will resume our drive for a few more hours to reach Dhap.

You can spend the morning exploring the small market town of Dhap Bazaar. We will begin the trek a while after breakfast. We will have a brief stop at Sigane before we reach our destination, Jhapre. From Jhapre, you will be able to enjoy superb views of Everest as long as the weather is good. You can spend the afternoon exploring the village’s monastery.

Once again, enjoy the fantastic view of Everest, Nuptse and a number of other peaks glistening golden in the morning sun. After we’ve had our breakfast, we will set out on the road and our first stop will be Bhulbhule. From Bhulbhule, we will make a steep ascent up the forested trail to Lhamuje. The rhododendron forests lead you to a pasture land. We will trek past the grazing field to cross the mani wall and trek along the twisting trail up to Pikey Base Camp. For the afternoon, visiting the Yak Cheese Factory nearby is a good option.

Rise and shine early for a pre-dawn hike along the rocky ridgeline to Pikey Peak (4065m). Sir Edmund Hillary stated the view of Everest from Pikey Peak is the best in Nepal, and it is pretty clear why. Apart from Everest (8,848m), you can also enjoy good views Thamserku (6608m), Kangtega (6685m), Dorje Lakpa (6966m), Gaurishankar (7134m) and more. On a good day, Pikey Peak sports views stretching from the Annapurnas and Dhaulagiri (8,167m) to Langtang and Manaslu (8,163m), all the way to Kanchenjunga (8586m). Once we’ve had a good fill of the jaw dropping scenery, we will begin our descent to Lamjura. We will pass a number of mani walls and chortens on the trail and eventually arrive at Junbesi.

We will take one day off our main trail for some fun exploration. As usual, we will head out after breakfast for a hike to Thuptenchholing Gompa which is a 19th century monastery. The trek will be a pleasant ascent along the Junbesi Khola. You’ll get a better understanding of the region’s culture, traditions, religion and lifestyle after spending some time at the monastery. Once we’re done exploring, we will head back down to Junbesi.

Today, we will get back on the main trail and simply resume our return journey. Similar to the previous day, we will follow the Junbesi Khola but on the descent this time. We will cross a suspension bridge to reach Beni Ghat. Our destination for the day, Phaplu is just a short distance further.

With the trek completed, we will catch a half hour flight from Phaplu to get back to Kathmandu. Once at the capital, you are free to spend your leisure time as you like. You can explore the city on your own, head to Thamel for souvenir shopping or simply relax at the hotel.

After breakfast, you can spend your leisure time as you wish. If you have a flight scheduled, our representative will escort you to Tribhuwan International Airport a few hours before your flight time.
